Repère Boréal’s Spa Music: An Original Work by Peter Fedun
Picture yourself at the spa, in a warm bath. The last rays of sun give way to a sky turning pink. And beneath the quiet song of birds, the Repère Boréal’s spa music settles in, light as a breath, gently carrying you toward calm.
We often talk about the relaxing experience found throughout the Repère Boréal forest. Slow mornings, reading tucked away in the woods, hours spent at the spa, evenings watching the stars around the fire.
But this experience wouldn’t be quite the same without the music that fills the spa area and common spaces. An original work of seventeen pieces, composed by Peter, a member of our team, letting us settle into the calm that lives here.
Let us introduce you to Peter Fedun
As a teenager, Peter played clarinet in the Youth Orchestra. At 14, he became the singer of a rock band for five years. He then returned to university, immersing himself in sound design, electroacoustic music, and musique concrète.
He went on to collaborate with two contemporary dance companies and a theatre company. It was through these collaborations that Peter found his calling: composing music for stage productions.
Years later, the Repère Boréal team invited Peter and his partner to spend a weekend on-site, just to try it out. Three weeks later, they sold the house they had lived in for 23 years to settle in Charlevoix.
Peter often speaks of the beauty and serenity of Charlevoix, of Repère Boréal. Here, he finds a calm, restorative refuge. And it’s precisely this state of mind that inspires him to compose for Repère Boréal.
Seventeen pieces to move through a full day
The hour-and-a-half work that fills the common areas and spa zone is made up of seventeen pieces that follow the rhythm of a day from start to finish. It begins with New Day Dawning, followed by Waking Up, Waking, Early Morning, Quiet Afternoon. One piece was born from Cap-aux-Oies beach, Peter’s favourite. And the work closes with Evening and Drifting to Sleep.
Peter researched which birds actually live in the Charlevoix region so he could weave them into the pieces. For him, every sound had to belong to this land.
Composing this work took 10 to 12 months, not because the music itself demanded that much time, but because the computer holding his entire digital workspace stopped working on Christmas Day. Everything he had accumulated was gone. Peter had to buy new software, completely different from what he’d used for over ten years, and learn it while composing at the same time. Work he says he’s still refining today.
